Item Moderating Influence of Sustainability Strategies on the Relationship between Institutional Management Practices and Performance of Chattered Public Universities in Kenya.(2022-09-23) Kariuki, Peter; Ombaka, Beatrice; Kiumbe, PaulThe current environment in Kenya’s public Universities is a turbulent one and highly competitive. To ensure survival and sustainability, public Universities require to adopt and implement competitive strategies. Thus, the study sort to determine the moderating influence of sustainability strategies on the relationship between institutional management practices and performance of chattered public universities in Kenya. To achieve the objective, the study was based on a pragmatic philosophy and mixed research method with a target population of 31 chattered public Universities. Census approach was used with 234 respondents who were university top managers. Primary data was collected using a 5 point Likert type questionnaire. The instrument was validated by research experts and yielded a Cronbach’s reliability between alpha of α= 78.7- 80.6. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The regression analysis revealed that institutional management alone accounts for 52% of the variation of performance of chattered public Universities (Adjusted R2=0.52). The study was anchored on social network theory. To achieve the objective, the study was based on a pragmatic philosophy and mixed research method with a target population of 31 chattered public Universities. Census approach was used with 234 respondents who were university top managers. Primary data was collected using a 5 point Likert type questionnaire. The instrument was validated by research experts and yielded a Cronbach’s reliability alpha of α= 80.6. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that public participation had statistical significant influence on performance of chattered public universities in Kenya. Regression analysis results showed that public participation alone accounted for 24.9 % of the variation of performance of chattered public Universities (PP) (R2=0.249, t=14.20 p, <0.05). This study concluded that public participation is an essential strategy Universities can use in their endeavour to improve on their performance. It was recommended that managers of universities should promote participatory management practice to enhance high morale, commitment and enthusiasm among staff in the pursuit and attainment of institutional goals and objectives. To ensure survival and sustainability, public universities require to adopt and implement competitive strategies. Many scholars have investigated sustainability efforts by universities in pursuit of performance, however, it is still not clear how sustainable strategies have the greatest influence on the performance of Public Universities. Thus, the study set to establish the influence of sustainability strategies on the performance of Public Universities in Kenya. The study was anchored on resource based theory. To achieve the objectives, the study was anchored on a pragmatic philosophy and mixed research design with a target population of 234 University top managers. Primary data was collected using a 5-point Likert-type questionnaire and an interview guide. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that sustainability strategies had a significantly statistical influence on the performance of public universities in Kenya. The regression analysis for composite results revealed that sustainability strategies (SS) alone account for 53% of the variation of performance of Public Universities (R2=0.53, (t=7.68, p<0.05). Regression analysis for individual results, cost reduction (CR) (R2 0.518, t=18.07 p, <0.05), collaboration (C) (R2=0.418, t=2.7 p, <0.05) and diversification (D) (R2=0.218, t=8.07 p, <0.05). This study concluded that adherence to good corporate governance practices are essential strategies Public Universities can use in their endeavour to improve on their performance. It is further recommended that University top managers should adhere to good corporate governance practices, specifically to management guidelines, allow for public participation and be transparent in their actions. Further, the results present important implications to University top managers, other corporate entities, policy makers, and stakeholders in the University education sector in Kenya and across the world.Item Influence of Stakeholder Participation in Utilization of Monitoring and Evaluation Results on the Performance of Fish Farming Projects in Kenya(IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science, 2018-09) Kiumbe, Paul; Wambugu, Lydiah; Luketero, StephenThis study, sought to establish the influence of stakeholder participation in utilization of Monitoring and Evaluation results on the performance of fish farming projects in Kenya, a case of Economic Fish farming projects Nyeri County. This study was guided by a pragmatic research paradigm for a mixed research method in a concurrent parallel research design. The study targeted the eight fish farming projects funded by the Economic Stimulus programme in Nyeri County. The target population was1198 project participants. The sample size was 271 respondents comprising of 247 farmers, 4 project managers and 24 committee members obtained through purposive and stratified random sampling techniques. Structured questionnaires were administered to collect quantitative data while focus group discussions were conducted to collect qualitative data. The instruments were tested for validity and reliability through the content validity index (CVI=0.833) and the Cronbach Alpha‟s index (a=0.795) for reliability. Regression models were used to analyse quantitative data while qualitative data was analysed using content analysis. The study found out that the level of stakeholder participation in utilization of Monitoring and Evaluation results was average (M=3.43).The study established a significant influence of stakeholder participation in utilization of M&E results (t=14.20, p<0.05) on performance of fish farming projects. The study recommends that fish farming projects should increase utilization of M&E results so as ensure better performance of fish farming projects. The study provides a stakeholder participation model for strengthening the performance of fish farming projects
