Item Moderating effect of social media on relationship between entrepreneurial networking and performance of youth owned agro processing SMEs in Kenya(2020) Ombaka, Beatrice Elesani; Kariuki, Francis K.; Kyalo, TeresiaThis paper was anchored on a pragmatic research paradigm. The study used a cross-sectional survey where a self-semi structured questionnaire was administered to collect the primary data from the target population who were youth-owned SMEs. The study was limited to 135 youth-owned enterprises where 357 employees were selected randomly to form the study sample; the key respondents of the study were limited to owner-managers of small and micro enterprises and top management employees. The questionnaires were tested for reliability and validity. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that there is a significant relationship between youth-owned. The study revealed that entrepreneurship networking has a significant effect on the performance of the agro-processing SMEs owned by the youths. However, there is a need for SMEs to further establish networks outside their business circle and seek networks with other bigger firms in the market. The study, therefore, recommends that there is a need for SMEs to invest more in social media marketing and networking of the SMEs for improved performance.Item Nexus Between Capacity-Building Strategic Renewal and Performance of Youth-Owned Agro-Processing Small and Medium Enterprises in Selected Counties in Kenya(2022-05-30) Kariuki, Francis K.; Kyalo, Teresia; Ombaka, Beatrice ElesaniFor the success of any business, there is a need for continuous improvement of the competitive advantage. The ever-changing economic environment is a big challenge for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) especially those that don’t possess strategic plans. In the recent turbulent times caused by globalization, SMEs are facing challenges and this has seen a number of them collapsing. The purpose of this study was to examine the nexus between capacity-building strategic renewal and performance of youth-owned agro-processing SMEs in selected counties in Kenya which variables of the study were investment training, management skills training, and bookkeeping training. The study was anchored on transformation learning theory and the research design adopted was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. The study targeted youthowned agro-processing SMEs registered by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the four County Governments namely, Nyeri, Kirinyanga, Murang’a, and Nyandarua. The sampling frame was 287 and the population under study was 287 youth-owned agro-processing SMEs. The study gathered primary data using a semi-structured questionnaire with predetermined questions and highly standardized techniques of recording. The findings of the study were presented by the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. From the findings, the overall model of the study was R2 = 0.498, meaning that capacity-building strategies explained 49.8% of the variation in performance. The study coefficients was 0.834, tis 19.141, which was >2, and a p-value of 0.000 which implied that there was a statistically significant influence of capacity-building strategies on the performance of youth-owned agro-processing SMEs. In conclusion, it was noted that capacity-building influences the performance of the youth-owned agro-processing SMEs in selected counties in Kenya. This study recommends that there is a need for SMEs to further establish capacity-building strategies.Item Relationship between process innovation, entrepreneurial passion and performance of pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in Kenya.(Strategic Studies in Business and Finance, 2023-09) Maina, Kanyi Joseph; Wanjau, Kenneth Lawrence https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3146-5324; Kyalo, TeresiaThe study explores the impact of entrepreneurial passion on process innovation and firm performance, based on self-efficacy theory. Relevant hypotheses were proposed, and the promotion mechanism of entrepreneurial passion on process innovation and enterprise performance was analyzed. A survey of 150 Kenyan firm owners/managers was conducted, and the results showed that process innovation has a significant positive effect on performance. Entrepreneurial passion is a significant moderator of the relationship between process innovation and performance, with firms with higher levels of passion achieving greater performance from implementing process innovation. This suggests that entrepreneurial passion can guide entrepreneurial persistence and promote enterprise performance by stimulating positive emotions and creativity. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The study used the census method for the 33 members of the tendering committee in the county government of Embu. The study adopted a census because the population was small. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data needed in the study. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze quantitative data. Quantitative responses based on the Likert scale were coded in the computer using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. Processed data were summarized in tables and then presented using simple frequencies and percentages. The study established that records management affected the tendering process. The study also revealed that the tendering process in the public sector is statistically significantly (P = 0.000) affected by records management. The study recommended that the County government of Embu should ensure that the tendering process is effective, by adopting advanced training in the record management and filing systems so as to maintain and secure all tender records in the procurement departmentItem Examining the Influence of Strategic Land Rehabilitation on Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (A Case of Kilome – Kenyaland Reclamation)(IJCEM International Journal of Computational Engineering & Management, 2015-03) Kyalo, Teresia; Kiambati, KellenThis study sought to To examine the influence of land rehabilitation on sustainable economic development in Kilome, specifically studying how entrepreneurial attributes, entrepreneurial value of Kilome area resources, potential entrepreneurial initiatives and entrepreneurial systems influence sustainable economic development. Existing local empirical studies did not establish this role. Four hypotheses were investigated using a census survey of data obtained from ten (10) Community Based Organizations in “Kilome” Kenya each with a sample of ten representatives. There was 90% response rate. Regression models were used to analyze data. The findings reveal that entrepreneurial attributes, entrepreneurial value of Kilome area resources, potential entrepreneurial initiatives and entrepreneurial systems influence sustainable economic development. The implication of the study for management and entrepreneurs is to integrate different strategies to achieve better sustainable economic development.Item Assessment of the Relationship Between Entrepreneurial Orientation, Organisational Culture Adaptability and Performance of Christian Faith-Based Hotels in Kenya(International Journal of Entrepreneurial Knowledge, 2019-03-15) Muriithi, Ruth Wanjiku; Kyalo, Teresia; Kinyanjui, JosphatOrganisational culture has been the focus in both theory and practice and has captured attention throughout the last decade because of its substantial relationship between the concept itself and its outcomes such as gaining competitive advantage and performance in businesses. Entrepreneurial Orientation refers to the strategy making processes that it provides organisations with a basis for entrepreneurial decisions and actions. Despite of its importance and being a popular entrepreneurship concept there is little evidence of research that has been done to determine the relationship between Entrepreneurial Orientation, organisational culture adaptability and performance in hotels and where applied it is minimal. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between Entrepreneurial Orientation, organisational culture adaptability and performance of Christian Faith-Based Hotels in Kenya. This study was anchored on the epistemology philosophy and adopted a positivist approach. The study used the mixed methods approach guided by a cross-sectional survey research design. The variable items for organisational culture adaptability and performance were measured using the five-point Likert scale and using the Denison’s organisational survey instruments. The population of the study included 72 managers and 1878 junior staff from 24 Christian faith-based hotels in Kenya. Structural equation models (SEM) and an MMR model were fitted to assess the objective of the study. Based on the SEM and MMR models, the study found that adaptability has a significant positive influencing on the performance of Christian Faith Based Hotels β= 0.520, t= 2.444, p-value=0.018). The study also found that Entrepreneurial Orientation had a moderating role on the relationship between organisational culture adaptability and performance of Christian Faith Based Hotels based on the MMR model that had a significant change in R due to addition of the interaction term (R-square change=.063, F-change=4.293, p-value=0.043). The study is important to a business because it will encourage it to adapt to the environment to improve performanceItem The mediating effect of entrepreneurial orientation on the relationship between decision-making and firm performance in Kenya(International Journal of Commerce and Management Research, 2017-08) Mkala, Mwamisha; Wanjau, Kenneth; Kyalo, TeresiaManufacturing firms are the single greatest contributors to industrialization and economic development. In Kenya, manufacturing firms contribute 14% of gross domestic product, train and employ 30% of the workforce, and develop the country’s industrial infrastructure. However, the sector has experienced sustained poor total factor productivity and waning competitiveness in both domestic and global markets. Manufacturing operations seem to lack the input of entrepreneurial management. The purpose of this study was to establish how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) influences the relationship between decision-making and manufacturing firm performance in Kenya. Eighty-three owners/managers of food manufacturing SMEs were surveyed using a semi-structured self-administered questionnaire, and the collected data analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 and Smart PLS 3 software’s. The findings show that EO fully mediates the relationship between decision-making and firm performance. The paper concludes that coupling decision-making with EO forms a critical strategy for enhancing firm performance. The study recommends that manufacturing firms should develop and utilize employees’ EO capabilities through such actions as strategic delegation.
