Item Effect of On-the-Job Training Techniques on Performance of SMES in Mombasa County.(South Sahara Academic Publishing, 2023-08) Ibua, Mary; Kariuki, Anne; Kamau, CharlesOrganizations rely largely on their employees to deliver high-quality production and performance. This means that staff needs to be skilled and knowledgeable, which can only be achieved through learning and development. Most small and medium-sized (SMEs) organizations hardly train their staff, and as such, performance is affected. This can be seen in the poor performance of some SMEs. To change this trend, it is thought that improving the competence and capacity of the employees can improve their performance. Training, especially on-the-job training, will give the SME in the construction sector hands-on experience. The main objective of the study was to investigate the effect of on-the-job training techniques on the performance of SMEs. The specific objectives covered employee coaching and apprenticeships. The study was anchored on social learning theory and human capital theory. The study employed a descriptive research design. The target population was stratified as per the position held in the organization. Primary data was collected through the use of structured questionnaires, which were self-administered to the respondents. The data was analyzed using SPPS, where descriptive analysis was done to obtain means, standard deviations, and inferential statistics. Pearson Moment of Correlation analysis was conducted to test the strength of the variables, and regression analysis was done to check the relationship between the study variables. The study established that employee coaching and apprenticeship all had a significant and positive effect on the performance of SME. The study concludes that on-the-job training techniques have a significant effect on organizational performance. The study recommends that training is very significant in improving the performance of SMEs, hence it should be embraced in the construction sector. As such, there should be more investment in enhancing training programs so as to drive organizational performance.Item The Relationship Between Information Sharing and Quality Management in the Small and Medium Beef Enterprises in Kenya(2015-02) Wanjau, Kenneth N.; Gichira, Robert; Kibuchi, Joyce M.Research on organization economics reports a general trend towards information sharing in food supply chains. Business globalization and efficient communication via Information Technology, have forced food enterprises to turn towards a more cooperative behavior. While this change to cooperative data communication has occurred in other supply chains, it is not common in beef supply chains. Studies have shown that efficient coordination of chain information enables seamless traceability and harmonization of production processes between the various stages of the supply chains. There is substantial evidence documenting the effects of information sharing on SME growth and performance but adequate empirical evidence on the relationship between information sharing and quality management in the beef enterprises is lacking. This study sought to fill this knowledge gap. Simple random sampling was adopted and a semi-structured questionnaire was used to generate data from selected respondents in the beef sector in Kenya. Data was analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results showed a positive relationship between information sharing and quality management. Therefore, enterprises should ensure flow of information for quality products in a competitive global market.Item Moderating Role of Entrepreneurial Orientation on the Relationship between Relationship Lending and Financial Performance of manufacturing SMEs in Kenya(2015) Wanjau, Kenneth Lawrence; Rotich, Abraham Kipkemboi; Namusonge, GregoryThe purpose of this study was to determine the moderating role of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on the relationship between relationship lending and financial performance of manufacturing SMEs in Kenya. Relationship lending has gained a lot of interest worldwide as it is seen as an avenue to help bridge the information gap between SMEs and the banks thus ultimately helping SMEs access credit. Further, although credit is important to SMEs, entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is key as it determines the success or failure of SMEs. There is little research that has been done to determine if EO moderates the relationship between relationship lending and SME performance in Kenya. The study used a crossectional survey research design with the population being the 620 manufacturing SMEs involved in relationship lending arrangements with commercial banks in Kenya. Stratified random sampling was used to pick a sample of 160 from which the proprietors / CEOs of the respective companies filled the questionnaires. The main data collection instrument was a semi structured questionnaire. The hypotheses in this study were tested using structural equation modeling and hierarchical moderated multiple regression (MMR). The study found evidence that EO moderates the relationship between relationship lending and financial performance of manufacturing SMEs in Kenya.
