Item Influence of Political and Cultural Factors on Education in Kenya: Approaches to Build Competencies(2015-05) Kiambati, Kellen; Itunga, JuliusEducation has received considerable attention worldwide; however, its low success rate in Kenya both in terms of quality and quantity warrants further investigation. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of political and cultural factors on education. The political factor constitutes government resource support, internet and policy on quality of teachers whereas the cultural factor focuses on early marriages, polygamy and female genital mutilations. Drawing on the theory of source-position performance, source of education should be promoted through various approaches. In the paper we propose a couple of approaches to build capability.Item Physical Planning and Growth of Private Primary Schools in Kenya(Journal of Management and Business Education, 2020-11) Kiambati, Kellen; Njiri, Julius; Mbugua, Levi; Mwenja, DominicIn Kenya, the number of private schools has increased more than four times since the introduction of the Free Primary Education (FPE) policy in 2003. The number of children attending private primary schools increased from 4.6% in 2004 to 11.5% in 2007. With such increment, there has been challenges on the determinants of growth of education institutions. It is against this background that the study examined the influence of physical planning on the growth of private primary schools in Kenya. the study was anchored in the resource dependency view where the managers of institutions have the ability to acquire, Plan and maintain resources that are important to the growth of an organization. The target population in this study comprised of 7,418 private primary schools in all eight regions of Kenya. Cluster sampling technique was employed of 50% of the target regions were sampled, leading to four out of eight regions being selected. From these regions random sampling was then used to select 320 respondents who were either the principals’/Head teachers or deputy principal of the schools. A questionnaire was used to collect data and Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyse data. The study found a strong and significant correlation between physical planning and growth of primary schools. This study therefore recommended that physical planning was an important factor in determining growth of private schools. The study further recommends that owners of private primary schools should be aware of the facilities that are crucial and most important to students in the teaching and learning. This will intern influence the growth of the private primary schools in Kenya.Item Managerial Skills and Corporate Strategic Planning(International Journal of Management Science and Business Administration, 2016) Kiambati, Kellen; Itunga, JuliusThe aim of this study is to establish the relationship between managerial skills and corporate strategic planning. The study was premised on increased call to meticulous strategic planning in all organizations across all sectors in Kenya. A close examination of existing literature showed that very little has been done in the area of evidence-based strategic planning. Public and private institutions participated in this study. The findings showed a positive and significant relationship between managerial skills and corporate strategic planning. The implication of the findings for management is to give more attention to managerial skills.Item Faculty Beliefs about Multilingualism and a Multilingual Pedagogical Approach(ERIC, 2019) Kiambati, Kellen; Meiramova, SaltanatLanguage skills are the ultimate 21st century social skill, linked to creativity, problem solving, and the ability to effectively communicate. Knowledge of teachers’ beliefs is central to understanding teachers’ decision-making in the classroom. In an interconnected and globalized world, foreign language is a global competency, and multilingualism is an essential social skill. Multilingualism plays a significant role in developing the intercultural skills necessary for global talent in a globalized workplace, for an effective and engaged cosmopolitan global citizen, and it is an essential tool in addressing complex global issues. In this study a sample of 151 faculty members participated in the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect primary data. The secondary data were collected from the documents in the ministry of Education. Study revealed that faculty beliefs affect multilingualism. The value of R2 of .45 indicates that 45% of the variations in multilingualism in learning is explained by faculty beliefs in general. This means that the universities need to take into consideration the multilingualism while teaching in institutions of higher learning.Item Human Capital Development and Services Delivery of Public Health Facilities(International Journal of Commerce and Finance, 2020) Kiambati, Kellen; Chege, Agnes Kabithe; Mwenja, Dominic; Mbugua, LeviHealthcare provision stipulated by Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a relatively new concept in many developing countries SubSaharan Africa part of Asia. Therefore, this study examined the influence of human capital development on the service delivery of devolved County Health Facilities. The path coefficients were positive and significant at 0.05 level of significance. The path coefficient beta value was β = 0.50. These findings indicate that for every 1-unit increase in human capital development, service delivery is predicted to increase by 0.5 in public county health facilities in Kenya. The study concluded that measures contributed to the positive relationship between human capital development and service delivery in these facilities. As the hospitals lacked funding of further training for their staff and also failed to pay competitive salaries and allowances, the study recommends that for improved service delivery within these facilities, promotions should be on performance, as well remuneration. Most employees will work hard when they know that they get rewards for it. In the paper we propose a couple of approaches to build capability.Item Post-2015 Development Planning: Adaption of a Holistic Approach to Planning and Research - a Commentary from a Practitioner’s Perspective(International Journal of Innovation and Economic Development, 2004) Kiambati, Kellen; Itunga, JuliusIn this article, we analyse the argument that lack of holistic approach in planning and research have contributed to the lack of sustainable development in Africa. We base our discussion on the speech by the special advisor on the national consultation on the post-2015 development as it relates to Uganda and other African Context (held on 8th August 2015). The advisor was convinced that there is a need to adopt a more integrated and comprehensive planning approach to reinventing traditional development tools, and meeting persistent and emerging challenges. Efforts must be made to start putting in place the practical measures, markers, mechanisms and partnerships that make sustainable advancements possible. Scholars and managers are called upon to take the challenge of demonstrating how the adoption of a holistic approach in planning, and research can contribute to sustainable development.
