Item The Role Visual Resources and Improvised Techniques Play in the Actualization of Bukusu Circumcision Songs(2023-07) Juma, Benson Wabwile; Maina, Lucy Muthoni; Maitaria, Joseph NyehitaThe study is an analysis of visual resources and improvised techniques in actualization of the Bukusu circumcision songs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role visual resources and improvised techniques play in the actualization of Bukusu circumcision songs. The study employed Performance Theory because it was performance-centered approach and more adequate to analyze visual resources and improvised techniques employed in Bukusu circumcision songs in a more effective way. The study relied on fieldwork methods like note taking, video recording, interviews, and questionnaire and participant observation. It also employed purposive sampling procedures that used to obtain a maximum number possible of informants from whom data was collected, analyzed and documented. Both primary and secondary sources were utilized in data collection. The quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) in which, the rating scale was as follows: Strongly Disagree (SD) = 1; Disagree (D) = 2; Agree (A) = 3; Strongly Agree (SA) = 4. While the qualititative data was analysed thematically then subjected to the rating scale. The researcher concluded that, visual resources and improvised techniques play a role in the actualization of Bukusu circumcision songs in regard to; composition, aesthetics and performance. The findings in table 2 showed that, majority of respondents 106 (56.7%) strongly agreed that composition of visual resources and improvised techniques played a role in the actualization of Bukusu circumcision songs. Elements like gestures, costumes and dramatic elements like body movements, facial expressions and tonal variations. VR and IT turned a boring song into an interesting and memorable song. Facial expression showed feelings of the performer and audiences, the costumes of the performers, all combined reveled the beauty and the semantic content of the song and the performance. The findings on aesthetics in table 3 established that, women’s personal interest in aesthetics in BSC had a role on use of visual resources and improvised techniques, ululation brought in a happy mood of the mother and aunties of a circumcision candidate at 15 (76.9%). Youth at 20 (66.3%) believed that aesthetics had a role on VR and IT like costumes was associated with seriousness of the initiation process. Men liked aesthetics of visual resources and improvised techniques at 35 (70.7%). These implied that, men just like women and youth had an interest in aesthetics exhibited in BCS through VR and IT made the song exciting. VR and IT in BCSs had its messages as well as its aesthetics which were learned through the language of drum, the clapping of hands, the characterization and body movements of the performers; the participation of audience and their imitation of the other audience-performers and the ululations by aunties and mothers made the songs enjoyable. Concerning the performance of VT and IT, the study in table 4 established that, 113 (60.6%) strongly agreed that, during performance of BSC, visual resources and improvised techniques were employed by the both the performer and audience-performer that made a song lively. The study recommends that, the roles of visual resources and improvised techniques in Bukusu circumcision songs cannot be ignored; there is need for the government of Kenya and other cultural stakeholders to appreciate these components and initiate programs that promotes traditional circumcision songs as a sources of tourist attraction activities in Kenya.Item Akporhonor, B. Utafiti huu utaongozwa na nadharia ya uhakiki wa mtindo na uchanganuzi wa data utaongozwa na mihimili ya nadharia hii kisha matokeo yatawasilishwa kwa njia ya maelezo.Item When two Horses Become Minji na Ndengũ (Peas and Green Grams): A Cognitive Integration Analysis of Blended Idioms of Political Campaign in Kenyan Newspapers(Advances in Language and Literary Studies, 2019-07) Ogal, George Ouma; Gathigia, Moses Gatambuki; Maitaria, Joseph NyehitaPolitical campaigns are emotive activities that rely on language to attract the attention of the public. In fact, electioneering periods in Kenya are heavily laced with idiomatic expressions such that one would be required to use the interrelatedness between language and cognition to understand the utterances of a speaker. It is against this backdrop that the present study analyzes the cognitive processes of the idiom minji na ndengũ (peas and green grams) vis-à-vis the canonized form. The idiom minji na ndengũ (peas and green grams) drew a lot of attention during the Kenyan official electioneering period (May and October, 2017) and was extensively used in both the print and social media platforms. The study is anchored in three objectives: to categorize the idiom minji na ndengũ (peas and green grams) in terms of compositionality; to establish the vital relation between the blended idiom and the canonical form; and to interpret the blend using the Conceptual Integration Theory. The study employed the descriptive research design. The study purposively sampled the blended idiom minji na ndengũ (peas and green grams) which is a blended form of the idiom two horse race. Using content analysis, the study classifies and presents a diagrammatic conceptual interpretation of new knowledge based on metaphorical mappings to illustrate the emergent structure. A general finding of this study is that political campaigns create new meanings using deliberately blended idioms of war to improve figurative competencies. Further, one needs to immerse themselves in pragmatic inference in order to reveal the meaning of a blended idiomatic expression. The findings of this study imply that whenever the provisions of grammar prove deficient in unpacking certain messages, cognitive linguists, idiom theorists and researchers should apply the postulates of Cognitive Linguistics. The study concludes that blended idioms of political campaigns achieve creativity and novelty. Further, the comprehension of blended expressions requires the understanding of pragmatic inferences of the local context. Masuala hayo yanahusu namna wenyeji hao wanavyotangamana na wanavyoshughulikia maisha yao kwa ujumla. Kadhalika, ubainishaji wa vipengele hivyo vimewasilishwa kwa kuzingatia taijriba ya mtunzi kama mmoja katika jamii hiyo. Mashairi hayo yanapozingatiwa, inabainika kuwa; hisi za mtunzi zimedhibitiwa kwa lugha teule ya mafumbo inayojikita katika zaidi katika ‘lugha’ au ‘lafudhi’ yake ambayo ni lahaja ya Kimvita. Katika muktadha huu, jumbe hizo zinahitaji fasiri na maelezo kutokana na utamaduni wa mtunzi. Kwa mapana, mashairi hayo yana mwangwi unaogusia historia yataifa lake (hasa katika miaka ya baada ya 1963 nchini Kenya). Kwa maana hii, ushairi wa Abdilatif Abdalla unaweza kwa kihifadhi na kibainishaji cha vielelelzo vya utamaduni na uhalisi wa maisha ya jamii ya mtunzi. Katika kushughulikia uhusiano uliopo kati ya fasihi na utamaduni, makala haya yanaangazia baadhi ya mifano ya mashairi yaliyohifadhiwa katika Diwani ya Sauti ya Dhiki (1973). Mwishowe, inapependekeza namna mashari teule ya Kiswahili yanavyoweza kuwa hifadhi ya ‘viashiria’ vya ‘viishara’ vyatamaduni asilia katika jamii ya sasa.Item Metaphoric Conceptualisation of “LOVE IS A PLANT” in Gĩkũyũ: A Cognitive-Semantics Perspective(Bulletin of Advanced English Studies, 2019) Gathigia, Moses Gatambuki; Maitaria, Joseph NyehitaStarting from the premise that a metaphor is a cognitive mechanism in which one experiential domain is partially mapped onto a different experiential domain , this paper examines the metaphoric conceptualis ation of “LOVE IS A PLANT” in Gĩkũyũ from a cognitive semantics perspective. In order to achieve this objective, t he study adopted the fundamental tenets of the C onceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). An interview schedule was administered to 48 speakers of Gĩkũyũ by the researcher assisted by two research assistants of different gender. The data collected were subjected to the Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) to find out whether the lexical items collected were metaphorical or not. Using four annotators, includin g the researcher, the study identified nine plant osemic metaphors which play a pivotal role in the understanding of love in G ĩ kũyũ. The study concludes that plantosemic metaphors are co nceptual phenomena which are integral component of the Gĩkũyũ cultural milieu expressed in language . Ushairi kama kitengo muhimu cha fasihi, umekuwa ukitumiwa kuchochea usaili na tafakari kuhusu uhusika wa watu katika uongozi wa jamii. Aidha, umaarufu wake hautokani tu na maneno ya lugha iliyozoewa katika jamii bali kupitia kwa tamathali za usemi ambazo huhusishwa kwa makusudi katika ubebaji wa ujumbe unaowasilishwa.Hivyo, utanzu huu unakuwa ni nyenzo ya kuwaelekeza, kuwaelimisha na kuwazindua watu kuhusu uwajibikaji wa kushiriki na kuchangia kwa dhati katika masuala ya siasa na uongozi wa jamii.
